As far as I know Australia is the only country in the world that allows foreigners to own land, every other country you have to be a national of that country to actually buy land. But you can own the buildings etc condo's, apartments. They do this so it doesn't take it out of the reach of nationals of affordability, the nationals in most cases can afford land not like here

How do those who want to become permanent residents or citizens deal with this? Where I lice you are first a long term resident, then after 5 years can apply for permanent residency, and after 5 years permanent can apply for citizenship......... So if someone is new to Australia, with these long term plans and have bought a house there, does this mean you want to force them to sell their property and rent for however many years it is in Australia, that they can become a permanent resident?
