Tinaroo Dam has been fully allocated since 2005 when Qld signed up to the Water Market Reforms separating water from land so "Water can find its way to the highest value use via the Market". Tinaroo Dam makes secret amounts of no allocation releases for the Barron River Hydro Corp which then dumps the water in the ocean at Cairns where the Council receives Grants for Water Infrastructure for additional water supply, the latest is Water Harvesting from the Mulgrave River at Gordonvale which will do nothing towards restoring the security of Tinaroo Dam water destroyed by the no allocation releases which also had a distortion effect on the Water Market Price another price distortion is that farmers do not have the Hydro Corp to sell their Temporary Transfer Allocations to. There is 205,000ML in the TinarooBarron Water Market & in May 2024 11500ML of TinarooBarron water efficiency savings was auctioned with a reserve price of $3200 per ML,50% remains unsold. Cairns Council declined to purchase Tinaroo Dam Allocation when the price was around $700ML for +10 years from 2005. The main crop in the MDIA Mareeba Dimbulah Irrigation Area is sugar cane which uses 7 Ml per hectare per year. Before the Tableland Sugar Mill was built cane grown at Mareeba was crushed at Mossman now that Mossman Mill is closed Mossman growers received a subsidy to transport their cane to Gordonvale.
