In 1989 I was paying 18% interest on my mortgage and even working heaps of overtime I could not afford to pay anymore, at the end of the year my statement said I had paid $200 off the capital, young ones have never seen rates like that and it can happen again, we got through it it eventually the rates went down to 10% so we bought a better house and we were so happy, life is a struggle and most workers know it but we just made it through to a meagre retirement but I consider myself so lucky to get there, most won’t make it and I don’t ever think that any political parties even give a knob of goat shit about the people of Australia, just a warning to the young

This is actually incorrect for the only consistent information I could find (for Sydney unfortunately). in 1990 the average interest only payment on the average wage for the average house price in Sydney was about 108% of that total wage when it was 17%, earlier this year just before the interest rate cut and using the upper bound of interest rates (7.24%) using the same metrics it was 105%. Both are horrendous examples of not being able to afford to live, but we should also remember the 1990 one lasted for 6 months, this period now is going to be a never ending loop of misery for those on lower incomes trying to get into the housing market.
